1 out of 5 stars Disappointed   September 25, 2001

This is not a detox plan! I am very disappointed in this book, I gave up reading half way through, so my comments do not relate to chapter 8 onwards.

My main concern with this book is I cannot see how a detox plan could include eating meat and eggs, that being one of the main causes of heart disease and possibly linked to cancers such as colon cancer. Yes, of course everyone needs to eat the correct amount of protein every day but does everyone need that high dose of cholesterol found in all meat/poulty? (...)I believe that the author's concern is that a diet low in animal protein would not contain enough zinc (to counteract high estrogen levels) - it is perfectly possible to get enough zinc from a no animal protein diet, eat plenty of asparagus, collards, corn, mushrooms, okra, peas, spinach, aduki beans, etc. (...)I believe the reason this book is popular are that the author has cleverly tailored her detox diets to suit everyone without them having to make too many radical changes - she makes you think you are detoxing, I think the results you will see will be largely psychological.

I tried this book in an effort to get back on track. There is a diet for each season and a fat flush diet. I lost inches in weeks on the fat flush. Believe me and try it, I have no reason to lie this book truly worked for me.

I had amazing success with the program presented in this book. In two weeks, I lost 16 pounds, my skin cleared up, my eyes got brighter, my hair got shinier and bouncier, my energy level shot way up, and I just felt great. Gittleman's ideas are revolutionary, as well as biologically accurate. However, since I am HUMAN, I have to say that it is very difficult to follow the program for a longer duration (see the maintenance section). The foods are not altogether tasty, and there are no real allowances given for situations such as eating out, parties, holidays, etc. I think that in order for someone to follow this program and also have a truly diverse diet, one would need to do additional research. While I had great success during the two week detox period, I had a great deal of trouble integrating the maintenance portion with my every day life. Also, like many diets, it assumes the ability to cook every meal at your own kitchen, which is not usually the case for those of us who work and have busy, active lives.

5 out of 5 stars this is truth   September 23, 2000

I am suspicious of most books on natural nutrition and diet because they either promote 1)a quick fix or 2) a grin and suffer attititude; but this book is special. I find that my diet ebbs and flows, and this detox plan works perfectly with those natural tendencies. After a 2 week detox, I go to the maintenace plan which (for me) has a tendency to gradually fall apart. But alas, I am saved by the next seasonal detox diet. This program allows me to continually pull myself back together. I also appreciate the vitamin and mineral reference; my health food store is now becoming a place I can navigate through. I've found my path.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book to gain energy and insight into your health!   August 2, 2000

Oh I have read many books on nutrition and this is far and away the best: primarily because it makes sense! You begin with unsweetened cranberry juice in the morning and at the end of the day. This "Living Beauty Elixir" has become a sort of daily Zen experience of cleansing. In just 10 days I feel more energetic and my body feels softer and even a bit smoother. Give it a try!
